And now for something different: Edible Art!

Is your fridge door so covered with your kid's paintings that you don't have room for another masterpiece? Have her make her next work of art on a piece of bread. She can gobble it up when she's finished (and when you've finished admiring it).
  • Artist in residence:
    Your child
  • Food coloring:
    For the paint
  • Cups or bowls:
    One per paint color
  • Milk:
    Paint base
  • New paintbrush:
Invest in a new paintbrush dedicated to edible crafts. You don't want your child to get a mouthful of tempera!
  • Slices of white bread:
We'd normally endorse whole-grain bread, but good old Wonder Bread is a superior choice for this craft because the colors show up better on a smooth, white canvas. Day-old bread works best, so leave a few slices out of the bag for 12 hours prior to starting.
  • 1
Make the paint: Help the kids mix together 1 tablespoon of milk and a few drops of food coloring in a bowl. Eyeball the color. Add more food coloring if the color looks too light or more milk if it's too saturated.
  • 2
Hand out a few slices of day-old bread to your kids.
  • 3
Invite them to paint on the bread by dipping the paintbrush into the edible paint.
  • 4
When the kids have completed their masterpiece, toast the bread and marvel at how the colors intensify.
  • 5
Your "oohs" and "ahhhs" will soon turn to "yums" and "mores!" Coat their masterpieces in butter and chow down. Snack time has never looked so good! If only you could paint broccoli.
